Are we really still outing celebs?

Are we really still outing celebs? Last week, Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson made an Instagram post officially announcing her relationship with another woman, clothing designer Ramona Agruma. The reaction to what was assumed to be her coming-out post was mostly positive, albeit with some confusion thrown in. Then, the true story behind her post was revealed. We’ve since learned that the Sydney Morning Herald got wind of Rebel’s new relationship, and gave her two days to comment before publishing a piece on it. Instead, Rebel made her own Instagram post announcing the relationship. The initial article has been taken down, and a note from the editor – in which he claims they in fact did not “out” Rebel – has been published in its place. In response, Rebel wrote to supporters on Twitter: “Thanks for your comments, it was a very hard situation but trying to handle it with grace.” As Dana Piccoli wrote on Twitter, this type of “celebrity news” feels like a throwback to the 80s, and 90s, and not in a good way.

Here’s your dose of silly internet drama for the day. A debate ignited last week when New York Magazine podcaster Hannah Rosin tweeted “So Fire Island gets an F- on the Bechdel test in a whole new way.” (Her tweet has since been deleted.) Rosin went on to say “Do we just ignore the drab lesbian stereotypes bc cute gay Asian boys? Is this revenge for all those years of the gay boy best friend?” Margaret Cho, who plays a lesbian mother-hen figure in the film, responded to the tweet, saying “I didn’t realize I was drab. I don’t identify as drab. Bitch I’m fab!” The Bechdel test was originally created by cartoonist Alison Bechdel in her comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For” – mainly as a joke between the characters in the strip. Bechdel is certainly used to people taking the joke out of context since she first introduced it in 1995, but she decided to respond to Rosin’s bad-faith criticism nonetheless. “Okay, I just added a corollary to the Bechdel test: Two men talking to each other about the female protagonist of an Alice Munro story in a screenplay structured on a Jane Austen novel = pass. #FireIsland #BechdelTest,” she tweeted. Case closed!

Rebel Wilson isn’t the only one posting gay things on Instagram. USWNT soccer players Tobin Heath and Christen Press, who have never said anything explicit about their sexuality or relationship but who are very obviously dating, were both wearing gay clothing this week. First, Tobin posted a photo of herself wearing a hoodie that says “GAY VIBES,” and the following day, Christen posted of a photo herself wearing a shirt that says “A day without lesbians is like a day without sunshine.” Both items of clothing are from the brand re-inc, which Tobin and Christen own with Megan Rapinoe. Happy pride! Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira, has also blessed us with another photo of her and her hot butch at a wedding. And, Violeta Urtizberea and Julieta Nair Calvo reunited to “renew their wedding vows,” thrilling #Flozmin fans everywhere.

Other dispatches from the little queer people inside the internet:

  • Cher is collabing with Versace this Pride Month and the result is this incredible bedazzled “Chersace” t-shirt.

  • King Princess has a new music video in which she makes out with a naked version of herself.

  • Cara Delevingne has a new love interest: a singer named Minke. Be safe out there you two!

  • It’s been announced that Uma Thurman will star in the sequel to The Old Gaurd, where she hopefully be doing something gay with Charlize Theron.

  • Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach have become “the first queer women pictured in Architectural Digest in bed” in their recent issue. Okay!

  • Season 3 of The L Word: Generation Q has officially begun production.

  • Christina Aguilera was dressed like She-Hulk and wore a huge green strap-on during her performance at LA Pride. And that’s on allyship.

Until next time,
