Gayjoy Digest #08

Gayjoy Digest’s 2021 Year in Review

Good morning and welcome to another edition of the Gayjoy Digest.

This week, we’re here with a few scientifically-proven superlatives for our favorite queers of the year. Let’s get into it.

(Ed. note: these awards are based solely on our own opinions. But they’re right.)

Queer of the Year:

The winner: Elliot Page, no contest.

Honorable mentions:

  • JoJo Siwa, for coming out at 17, gaining an adoring lesbian fan base overnight, then doing a phenomenal job as half of the first same-sex pairing on DWTS.

  • Kristen Stewart, for surprising us all with her portrayal of Diana in Spencer.

  • Sha'Carri Richardson, for making us cry with that video where she qualified for the Olympics while wearing the orange wig her girlfriend picked out.

  • Janelle Monae for being the multi-talented queer woman of our dreams

  • Meg Stalter, for giving us “Hi gay.”

  • Mae Martin, for getting friendship tats with Elliot Page, and also for giving us another season of Feel Good.

Cutest celesbian couple:

The winner: Abbi Jacobson and Jodi Balfour. They just seem sweet, and we can’t resist a good kiss photo

Honorable mentions:

  • Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer

  • Niecy Nash and Jessica Betts

  • Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor (always)

  • Kehlani and 070 Shake

  • Beanie Feldstein and Bonnie Chance

Best coming-out TikTok:

The winner: Kehlani’s, in which she says, “I finally know I’m a lesbian,” while doing a scissoring motion with her fingers, then calls herself “gay ga-gay gay gay.”

Honorable mentions: Honestly, nothing else could compare to this.

Best extremely gay music video:

The winner: Silk Chiffon by MUNA (feat. Phoebe Bridgers). The homage to But I’m a Cheerleader is impeccable, and the whole thing is just SO gay.

Best Gen Z queer:

Winner: JoJo Siwa, for reasons we believe to be obvious.

Honorable mentions:

  • Diana Silvers

  • Tati Ringsby

  • Avery Cyrus

  • Basically everyone cool on TikTok

Best bisexual:

The winner: It’s a tie, and the winners are Cardi and Meg for their performance at the Grammys. Remember how mad people were about this!?

Honorable mentions:

  • Tessa Thompson, especially when she kissed Rita Ora

  • Aubrey Plaza, mostly just for being hot

Our favorite (fictional) top:

The winner: Bette Porter. We all saw that scene. You know the one.

Honorable mention: Villanelle of Killing Eve, and we are VERY willing to bump her up to first place depending on how season four goes next year.

Our favorite (fictional) bottom:

The winner: Dakota Johnson’s character in The Nowhere Inn.

Honorable mentions: Why would we need any?? Look at that photo again.

And because we couldn't resist, our favorite (presumed) real-life top:

The Winner: Liz Lambert - IYKUK and if you don't, we'll go on have a little scroll

Honorable mentions:

  • Lea Delaria

  • Young M.A.

  • Kate Mckinnon

  • Sue perkins

  • Jane Lynch

  • Brandi Carlile

Hot person we wish were gay:

The winner: Zoe Kravitz. As much as we wish she and Taylour Paige were a “thing,” that IG post was… misleading

Honorable mentions:

  • Cate Blanchett (always)

  • Natasha Lyonne

  • Zendaya (though she might be queer??)

  • Dua Lipa

Most admirable exes:

The winner: St. Vincent and Carrie Brownstein, for remaining best friends following their split in 2012. Some stereotypes exist for a reason, and this is one we love.

Honorable mentions: Can we put Shawn and Camila here? Is that wrong?

Hottest politician:

The winner: Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić. This is perhaps too niche a category, but they’re hot. Sorry!

Honorable mention: Do we need one? … Okay, fine, Cynthia Nixon.

Best long-term relationship reveal:

The winner: Candace Parker and Anna Petrakova, revealing that they’ve been married for two years and are expecting a child. Cannot be beaten!

Biggest TERF:

The winner: J.K. Rowling. We hope she’s proud of herself.

Honorable mentions: We could probably find some, but we simply don’t want to.

Hottest athlete couple:

The winner: Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird, though we respect that Megan’s own teammates gave them a run for their money.

Honorable mentions:

  • Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger

  • Megan Jones and Celia Quansah

  • Kristie Mewis and Sam Kerr

  • Anissa Urtez and Amanda Chidester

Weirdest Architectural Digest home tour:

The winner: Cara Delevingne. Need we remind you of the vagina tunnel

Honorable mentions: None. One was enough.

Best lesbian reality show:

The winner: Tampa Baes, because it’s all we’ve got. (Pictured below is the only tolerable couple on the show, Ali and Nelly.)

Honorable mention: We wish!
