We can’t escape Che
Live, from NY its the GayJoy Digest a very Happy Pride Month to all the girls, gays, and theys. We wanted to keep up with all the great shit going on and so we made a guide to stay abreast and on it. Refer GayJoy Digest to 1 friend and get our NYC Pride Guide emailed to you. (See bottom of the email for referral links!)
We can’t escape Che. To celebrate this auspicious month, Variety put Che Diaz (aka Sara Ramirez) on the cover of Variety, and the pictures are abso-fucking-lutely insane. The clowni-ness of it all really makes sense considering who Che is as a character, and we honestly applaud Sara Ramirez for their bravery in portraying them. (The cheeky reference to Ellen in the title is also something to chew on.)
What are they trying to sell us now? It’s only the first week of June, and we’ve already been hit with one of the most absurd Pride advertisements to ever grace our screens. The ad is for a THC soda called Caan, which is partnering with the brand Weedmaps. The 4-minute advertisement features a confusing group of people including Gus Kenworthy, Kornbread, Hayley Kiyoko, Patricia Arquette, and a cameo from Sarah Michelle Gellar where she says “gay rights!” The Patricia Arquette verse is sung by none other than Kesha, and Patricia is wearing a crazy skin-tight pink spandex getup. (Patricia then transforms into Kesha herself.) Our guess is that Patricia is in this video because her sister was trans (that’s on allyship), but we’re not certain. You might just have to watch the video yourself.
Love is in the air. Hayley Kiyoko finally posted that video where she kissed Becca Tilley a bunch of times during her “For The Girls” release party. JoJo Siwa and Kylie Prew made out at a dodgers game alongside Nats Getty and Gigi Gorgeous. (You’ve also got to check out JoJo Siwa’s spread in Paste Magazine – see below.) Syd announced she is married at one of her concerts. Lucy Grace Barrett is probably dating Aisha Dee. Also, there’s a pair of lesbian foxes at a zoo.
New queer shows are on the horizon. We finally have a release date for the new, very queer television adaptation of A League of Their Own – it will premiere on August 12 on Amazon Prime. You can watch teh official teaser trailer here. Kristen Stewart has made an official announcement about her new gay ghost hunting show. Over on her producing partner Cj Romero’s Instagram page, Kristen made an adorable video announcing that the casting process for the show has begun. Know any gay ghost hunters or psychics? Send them her way. The new lesbian vampire Netflix series First Kill premieres this Friday, and Netflix released a sneak peek that was just an out-of-context lesbian kiss. Speaking of vampires, the first episode of the Olivier Assayas-helmed remake of his own film, Irma Vep, premiered on HBO this week. (Hint, it’s gay.)
Need some queer movies to see? A brand-spankin-new lesbian film premieres this week at Tribeca, and you should definitely check it out. It’s called You Can Live Forever, and it follows a lesbian teen in the ‘90s who is sent to live with a group of Jehova’s Witnesses, only to fall in love with a devout congregant. In-person screenings begin this Saturday, but if you’re not in New York you can stream it worldwide starting Monday, June 13. Watch the trailer for the film here. Also, Metrograph is doing a series called “Muff Dives: The Dyke Bar in Cinema,” which tracks the appearance of lesbian bars in film. The retrospective was curated by Melissa Anderson and begins June 17.
